What you can expect from the GTX 980 in modern use (2024–25):

It was a high-end card when released (2014). It still handles many games well at 1080p, especially older or less demanding titles.
For newer AAA games, you’ll often need to dial down graphics settings (medium/low), especially texture detail or shadow quality, to maintain smooth frame rates.
At 1440p, performance drops more noticeably. It can manage there but not with ultra settings, and sometimes not even with high depending on the title.
The 4 GB memory can be a bottleneck in modern games that use high-resolution textures, post-processing effects, etc.
It still supports modern graphics APIs like DirectX 12, Vulkan; though feature-level and future driver improvements are more limited than newer cards.

Solid for 1080p gaming at reasonable settings; still better than many very old or entry-level GPUs.
Good CUDA / compute performance for its age. If you do tasks besides gaming (GPU compute, general graphics work), it has utility.
If you can find one used in good condition for a good price, it can offer good value.
